They’re killing cops. And since it’s they, well, then we can’t really do much about it. So, it’s they who we all have long used as a collective and easy excuse for not doing more—for being victims. After all, we can’t do anything about it. Read The Entire Article

Among the crowd we found officers with more than 40 years of experience, rookies with less than 12 months on the job and even two separate academy classes (Albuquerque PD and Bernalillo County).

We had detectives, SWAT, narcotics, patrol officers and motor cops, as well as sheriffs, chiefs, commanders and sergeants. Representation came from federal, state, county and local jurisdictions. Hell, we even had the governor of New Mexico, Susana Martinez, a huge supporter of law enforcement, as an opening speaker. Read The Entire Article

When I was the commander of our Investigations Division, my chief asked me to have a “conversation” with the principal of our local high school. The issue to be addressed: Our school resource officer (SRO) carrying his duty weapon at the school. The principal didn’t want him to bring it into the school, and my job was to let her know that not having it on him at all times wasn’t an option. The meeting wasn’t only of the minds, but of philosophical differences—mine based in reality, hers in pure fantasy. Read The Entire Article

I took the call while sitting in a training office at the Wichita Falls, (Texas) Police Department. As I sat waiting for the introductions to play through and the one-hour show to begin, I looked around the office room.

The room was fairly typical: a bevy of books, videos, manuals, even some old VHS tapes. “Red guns” and other training equipment were also strewn around the three-desk room. As I continued waiting, my eyes were drawn to a piece of paper from the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP, www.odmp.org). The paper contained a picture, a name, a bio and a narrative description—all of which described how a particular police officer lost his life the previous day. Read more…

“You cannot address crime prevention without getting rid of assault weapons and handguns. I consider them a threat to national security, and I will go door to door if I have to, but I'm gonna convince Americans that I'm right, and I'm gonna get the guns.” That is a line uttered by fictional Commander and Chief Andrew Shepard played by Michael Douglas in the movie An American President. He makes the above declaration after delivering a heartfelt speech about love, country and character near the end of the movie. At the time (17 years ago), I never thought much about the Second Amendment: I only owned a couple of handguns, wasn’t a hunter and as a police officer I was allowed to have and carry a firearm virtually any time I wanted.

Two of the most common questions I get from officers around the country are: “How did you get started in training?” and “What is your advice for me (someone interested in training)?”

Answering the first one is simple and it’s probably the same answer used by many instructors: “I kind of just fell into it.”& My first ‘gig’ was assisting a PPCT Instructor Trainer friend of mine, Bob Nicholas.& I enjoyed it as doing knee strikes, pressure points and arm bar takedowns was fun.& But there was very little lecture and I didn’t have to put any training points together in a lesson plan.

In September 2010, I had the opportunity to formalize a small training company I began approximately 10 years earlier. We named it LifeLine Training Ltd. Through hard work, the hiring of the right people and the brilliant leadership of our CEO Lisa Gitchell, Lifeline flourished quickly to the surprise of many.

We had simple objectives when it began: 1) offer classes that were necessary and sought out by law enforcement, 2) update the curriculum constantly and 3) employ a cadre of dynamic instructors with years of real street experience. And so far—knock on wood—it’s been successful. So successful, in fact, that we found ourselves in the position to acquire one of the most renowned seminars in law enforcement history, the Calibre Press Street Survival Seminar. And we did.
