VIDEO: Flagstaff Officer Murdered

The video shows a typical response to a domestic violence call, it captures the moments leading up to the deadly confrontation with Robert Smith. It starts in his patrol car on the afternoon of Saturday, December 27, 2014. The officer was looking for a suspect in a domestic violence call.

He found the man, 28-year-old Robert Smith in a neighborhood off west Clay Avenue in flagstaff. Stewart questioned Smith about what happened between him and his girlfriend. During the conversation Stewart asks for permission to search Smith to make sure he doesn’t have any weapons. In a split second, things take a deadly turn. Smith pulls out a .22 caliber handgun and fired on the officer.

Officer Stewart was pronounced dead a short time later.
