VIDEO: PIT Maneuver Ends Chase

June 22, 2015

Information released by Marion County Sheriff’s Office through Facebook shows a recent pursuit.  The chase ends after a deputy uses a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing vehicle.  The video and press release can be seen here:

On Friday morning, Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Silver River Inn located at 5565 East Silver Springs Boulevard in Silver Springs in response to an in progress domestic violence battery. When they arrived on scene, an MCSO deputy observed the suspect Richard Sanders (DOB: 4/20/1989, W/M) driving away from the scene. Sanders fled from deputies and led them on a pursuit through Marion, Citrus and Levy County. During the pursuit, Sanders purposely rear-ended an MCSO patrol vehicle, which was attempting to box the suspect vehicle in and bring the chase to an end. The deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Sanders continued driving erratically, travelling into oncoming traffic and avoided the deployment of 7-8 sets of stop sticks.

The pursuit concluded in Levy County, just south of Highway 464 and Highway 41 when an MCSO deputy successfully performed a PIT maneuver on Sander’s vehicle. Once the vehicle was disabled, Sanders fled the scene on foot, K9 Sig attempted to apprehend him and Sanders battered K9 Sig by grabbing the dog by the neck and throwing him off his person. K9 Sig recovered and successfully apprehended Sanders.

During the pursuit, a deputy made contact with the victim of the domestic battery located back at the Silver River Inn, where she stated that Sanders had been physically abusing her for the last week – including this morning. Deputies observed evidence of abuse and developed probable cause for Sander’s arrest for the domestic battery charge. A warrant has been issued for the domestic battery.

An unknown substance was ejected from the suspect vehicle after the crash, which
deputies believe to be methamphetamine. Sanders and two other passengers in his
vehicle were transported to the hospital and are expected to recover. The MCSO deputy that was rear ended is being treated for his injuries and K9 Sig is unharmed. The investigation is continuing.

CHARGES:
Domestic Battery
Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
Battery on a Police Animal
Aggravated Fleeing
Possession of Methamphetamine

Additional charges are pending further investigation.
