Aurora, Colorado, police are investigating after camera footage that showed Denver Mayor Michael Hancock’s son cursing out an Aurora Police officer and threatening to get him fired during a traffic was leaked to a local news outlet.
“My dad’s the mayor, you f****** f*****!” 22-year-old Jordan Hancock can be heard saying to an officer, using a homophobic slur in police camera video obtained by KMGH-TV.
“Mayor of what?” the officer replies. “Don’t worry about it b****,” Jordan says, adding, “Guess what, I’m about to get you fired.” The young man continues to curse at the officer.
When the officer asks for what, Jordan repeats, “Don’t worry about it” before saying, “Hatin’ in blue.”
“I see your dad’s going to be proud,” the officer says as Jordan appears to drive away.
The incident occurred in Aurora, a municipality approximately 16.5 miles away from Denver, and was recorded during a traffic stop just before 8 a.m. on March 23. Hancock had been going 65 mph in a 40 mph zone and was forced to pay a $250 fine.
Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz told the broadcaster his department would be investigating who leaked the footage to the local broadcaster.
Denver’s mayor said his son has since apologized to the officer involved in the incident.
In a Tuesday tweet, Hancock said, “We’ve addressed our son’s behavior at a traffic stop with him. He’s apologized to the officer.”
“While we don’t support nor condone his inexcusable actions and words, we love our son dearly and will work with him to turn a personal mistake into a valuable lesson for himself and the community,” the mayor added.
Hancock himself recently issued an apology after a veteran police detective accused the Denver mayor of sexually harassing her while she was a member of his security detail six years ago.
Last February, Denver Police detective Leslie Branch-Wise accused Hancock of having made inappropriate comments to her and repeatedly sending her text messages during his first year in office in 2012.
In a statement issued by his office, Hancock said he wanted to “apologize for my own words from that time—text messages that were too familiar and unprofessional,” but claimed he had not realized at the time that his exchanges with the officer were “unwelcome.”
The mayor’s son’s incident was not the 22-year-old’s first run-in with police.
On September 28, 2014, Jordan was sitting inches away from Jalen Robinson when the latter was shot in the back of his head after a reported shouting match between friends. Robinson survived but suffered severe brain injuries.
His friend, Eddie Johnson, who was 19 at the time, is currently serving a 9-year prison sentence at a youth correctional facility in Pueblo after pleading guilty to the shooting.
