Video: Two Officers Shot, Suspect Fatally Shot

January 21, 2015

New Hope, Minn., City Hall is closed after a man shot and wounded two police officers after a swearing-in ceremony Monday night.

Police fatally shot the suspect just outside council chambers, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department.

Before a number of veteran New Hope police,  officers Joshua Eernisse and Adam Johnson were sworn in and left council chambers about 7:15 p.m. That’s when the gunman confronted the group.

Officers returned fire, killing the man, who was armed with a handgun according to police.

The injured officers were in good condition at a local hospital, Hennepin County chief sheriff’s deputy Mike Carlson said Monday night.

New Hope City council member John Elder, who is also a Minneapolis police public information officer, can be heard in the video telling his fellow council members to “get down and stay down.”  At one point, he is seen drawing his gun.

“For me, looking back at it, I had it easy,” Elder said. “I wasn’t out engaging and being shot at; I wasn’t in a position where I had to shoot, I had the easy part… We witnessed great law enforcement last night.”
